“Art is an inspirational artefact, a remedy, a reminder and a reason and purpose to keep going.” Jeffree Skewes

Tyger Gallery favourite Jeffree Skewes will be one of the amazing artists in Tyger’s upcoming group show, Living in Another World.

Tyger is delighted to welcome back gallery favourite - the outstanding Canberra-based artist Jeffree Skewes for our upcoming abstract landscapes show, Living in Another World.

The show brings together 40 artists from all over the country to show us the world we know and love through an abstracted lens.

Living in Another World runs from 19-28 April at Tyger Gallery in Yass. The online catalogue for the show will go out to subscribers in the week before opening. Sign up here to make sure you don’t miss out.

Jeffree has been making art and creating and innovating in the Canberra arts scene for decades - he is an extraordinarily talented artist, educator, poet and mentor. We absolutely love his work.

Ahead of the opening, Jeffree told us about his work in the show, Kelly Green, what it means to live an artistic life, and how art can give us all a reason to keep going.

How would you describe your work in the show?

Kelly Green is an abstracted landscape, representing a type of dense, lush bush setting, inspired by the notorious Kelly Gang, who knew the bush well enough to seek its camouflage and refuge to escape to and throw-off any would-be trackers seeking them out for retributions.”

“The surface is comprised of multiple and intimate views of country to reflect the experience of being within the bush, rather than gazing at it.”

“The title also plays with the notion of ascribing colours with general characteristic tags to reflect a distinction. Here the tradition of blending a nationality with a colour type is suggested ie. Irish / emerald / green / Kelly – Kelly Green.”

Where and how do you create your work?

“My studio is situated out the back, at home in Kambah, ACT. I have another (known as studioMAP), where I run art classes specifically for young people, located at M16 Artspace, Griffith, ACT.”

“Working between the two I create paintings and other two dimensional artworks. I'm also a writer to express and further develop my art ideas, stories, poetry and artistic related narratives.”

What inspires you?

“Living an artistic life is my fundamental occupation, inspired by navigating the splendour, mystery and knowledge of being a human being and artist on the beautiful blue planet.”

What do you hope people feel when they see your work?

“Perhaps the visions I express, share with the viewer that Art is an inspirational artefact, a remedy, a reminder and a reason and purpose to keep going.”

Anything else you want to tell us?:

“Life is a journey ...
Art comes from within…”

Register now for our opening celebrations of Living in Another World - Saturday 20 April, 2-4pm.
