“My driving motivation is to redefine our relationship with the land”: Stephanie Creigh

Stephanie Creigh is one of 40 incredible artists taking part in Tyger’s upcoming group show, Living in Another World.

Tyger is thrilled to welcome the outstanding Tamworth-based artist Stephanie Creigh to the gallery for our upcoming abstract landscapes show, Living in Another World.

The show brings together around 40 artists from all over the country to show us the world we know and love through an abstracted lens.

Register now for our opening celebrations of Living in Another World - Saturday 20 April, 2-4pm.

Ahead of the show, Stephanie told us a little about her artistic style, what inspires her, and why she wants to “redefine our relationship with the land.”

How would you describe your work?

Outside of the “traditional” view of Australian Landscape paintings, I would describe my works as bold, striking and effective.”

“I tend to lean more towards the abstract side of things. I find my works can be viewed completely differently depending on how close you are to the artwork.”

“Up close: textured layers of colour.”

“Further away: daubs of paint blending into an Australian landscape.”

Tell us about where and how you create your work?

“I currently live in Tamworth, New South Wales, creating landscape artworks from home, inspired by home.”

“Applying daubs of acrylic paint, offset by different mark-making created with the end of a paint brush, I love to build an array of patterns and textures.”

“To help build my paint, I use a mix-in gel impasto medium.”

“Recently, I've been experimenting with bright and vibrant colours, such as pinks, blues, oranges and blues.”

“By applying light on dark and dark on light, my painting technique contributes to the rich tertiary colour palette and symbolises Australia’s varied landscape.”

What inspires you?

“I source my inspiration from the natural landscape from the places I visit - whether it be rural properties, sunsets, coastlines or of trees I see passing by. In the case of my work, ‘Point of View’, I was deeply inspired by the vast landscape while overlooking the Peel Valley at the Hanging Rock Lookout, just a short drive from Nundle, NSW.”

“I take photographs of these places and later use and refer back to them to inspire the artworks I create.”

What do you hope people feel when they see your work?

“Building a distinct approach to landscape paintings, emotional connection to the land is supported through my art making.”

“My driving motivation for creating landscape artworks is to redefine our relationship with the land. By exaggerating the colours and shape of each landscape, my intention is to create a catalyst of emotion and to both elicit and exchange memories within the viewer.”
