Hills, Plains and Distant Ranges by Tarli Glover

Artist’s statement

The Western Victorian Volcanic Plains starts west of Melbourne and extends almost to the South Australian border. It is a long band of undulating plains, volcanic hills and mountains, stoney rises, shallow broad lakes and farmed land with shelter belts of cypress, pine and sugar gum. The colours are often muted and large areas are often devoid of substantial vegetation, the space seems open with big skies and long views. The distant ranges of the Grampians and the Pyrenees sit quietly in the background.

These characteristics are things that I am always drawn to. The familiarity I feel comes from a lifetime of living, working and traveling in many areas within this volcanic band.

My inspiration is usually taken from several locations but I’ve focused on the central regions of Victoria with nods to areas that lie within the Western District for my current body of work.

About Tarli Glover

Tarli is a professional visual artist based in Ballarat, Central Victoria and has exhibited widely throughout Australia in numerous group exhibitions and solo shows for nearly four decades.

Tarli’s drawing, painting and mixed media work have all reflected the familiar environments she has lived and worked in for most of her life. The regional landscapes of the central and western plains of Victoria feature prominently and continue to inspire the narratives of her compositions.

Predominantly semi abstract in nature, Tarli’s acrylic paintings depict a worked and altered environment with nods to the familiar. Her interpretations of space and colour speak of the powerful and lasting Impression of her surrounds on the aesthetics of her work.

Tarli has been shortlisted for several nationally recognised awards and prizes including the Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize, the Rick Amor Drawing Prize, Paul Guest Prize, National Works on Paper, Norvill and Kilgour Art Prizes, the Eutick Still Life Memorial Award, Redland prizes and the Hutchins Art Prize.

She was awarded the 2013 Eyre Art Prize, 2010 Flanagan Prize, 2012 Flanagan ‘Affordable’ Art Prize and the 2010 She Competition and highly commended in the 2010 Norvill art prize.

Tarli holds a BA in Fine Art painting from the University of Ballarat [now Federation University] and her work is held in private and public collections nationally including the Gurguis collection, Riddock Regional Art Gallery, the University of Ballarat Art collection and the Epworth Hospital.
