Lorraine Blackwell
Lorri has always enjoyed observing the ‘everyday’, the discovery of ‘extraordinary’ in the ordinary, and the delight of finding beauty in unexpected, often overlooked places, thus prompting another way of appreciating the already familiar.
Pursuing this interest, Lorri became fascinated by textures, colours, and shapes found within natural materials: rocks, bark, shells and even rusty metals, expanding this micro view into large abstract landscapes in oils.
Working from initial pastel drawings, Lorri incorporates symbols evolved directly from plein air observation, and uses various viewpoints, often aerial, to capture the underlying geometry and rhythm of these landscapes.
Lorri draws inspiration from daily walks, places visited on outback travels, or more global images of the imagination. She hopes to take the viewer into these enigmatic landscapes to identify with the beauty but fragility of our natural environment and thus the urgency to conserve it.
Lorri has recently been involved in 2022 group exhibitions at Rusten House Queanbeyan and with Networks Australia at Belconnen Art centre. Her connection with Yass stems from art classes with John McClung at the Tennis Club Art Group and as one of the founding members of VASY.
