Cassandra’s superb abstracted and mixed media work is inspired by the landscape. Her work in GIGANTIC is the stunning On a Winter’s Walk - a 200x100cm acrylic on canvas diptych.
It’s an absolute stunner, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
Ahead of the show opening, Cassandra told us about capturing the winter light, the expressive movement that comes with working on large canvases, and running out of paint.
What inspired this work?
“My family committed to hiking up one trig point in Canberra every month, for a year.”
“One month in winter it was freezing, and we just weren’t up for it. So instead, we walked around the wetlands at Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary. Back in my studio, I aimed to capture the magic of the winter light on the water and the energy and life of the grassy bank.”
Tell us about how you created this work.
“This piece was created with loose drawing, followed by multiple layers to add texture and depth. I felt drawn to use violets to really bring the painting to life and create a striking contrast with the grasses and dead wood trees.”
What particular challenges came from working on a piece of this size?
“I really enjoy the expressive movement that's involved in painting large. The greatest challenge I find is making a unique colour, underestimating the amount I will need and running out, and having to make more.”
What do you hope people feel when they see your work?
“I hope that this painting both energises the senses, and evokes a sense of calm.”
