Gadigal Country based mixed media artist Gabby Malpas is part of our upcoming group show, Life in Colour.

We are so excited to welcome the outstanding painter and ceramicist Gabby Malpas to Tyger for our upcoming show, Life in Colour.

The show brings together more than 30 incredible artists from all over the country.

Gabby is a Gadigal-based artist, and a proud maximalist creating joyful and celebratory art.

Ahead of the show opening, Gabby told us about flipping the script, how she creates her ceramic works, and speaking out against racism.

How would you describe your style?

"Modern Chinese in painting and ceramics: Flipping the script."

How do you create your works?

"[With] ceramics: A mixture of wheel thrown, hand built and applied decoration in a mixture of white and buff clays."

What's the story of your work in Life in Colour?

"The pieces on show are my adaptations of Peranakan ceramics found in Singapore, Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia."

What inspires you?

"Nature and lately, racism - the injustice of it drives me to speak out."

What do you hope people feel when they see your work?

"Joy."
