Kim is a Sydney-based artist who creates stunning abstract landscape art inspired by coastal rock formations. Kim’s work distils the raw beauty of the intertidal zone into minimalist, abstract compositions.

Her incredible piece in the show is Ember - it's acrylic on birch wood canvas and 60x80cm. It's a beauty.

Ahead of the show opening, Kim told us about filling her phone with photos of rocks, where she finds inspiration, and what she hopes people feel when they see her work.

Where do you create your work?

"This year I was fortunate to get access to a small private studio managed by my local council in Curl Curl Creative. It has been incredible to have a space dedicated to my art practice. My dining table does still see a project or two though."

How do you create your work?

"I often start with a reference image. We’re lucky to live on the water, and I have a very large album on my phone filled with photos I’ve taken of rocks. I like to make a few small sketches to test composition and angles before scaling up."

"I spend most of my time playing with the lines and shapes until they feel balanced. More often than not, I’ll mock up the colour digitally so I can experiment with palette and placement. Then it’s essentially colour by numbers, but more satisfying!"

What inspires you?

"So many different things! The texture of handmade paper. A pebble. A walk at high tide. A walk at low tide. Gum leaves. The feeling of sitting in the sun with your eyes closed. A new gallery exhibit. All of these things have sparked ideas for me."

What do you hope people feel when they see your work?

"A calm, steady energy."
