“[I hope people] experience my landscapes - not as a fixed place, but something alive, breathing, ever-changing and full of stories.” Emma O’Connell
Tyger is thrilled to welcome the work of Emma O'Connell to the gallery.
Emma is an exciting and talented contemporary landscape artist from the Central Coast of New South Wales. We are huge fans of her work, and we're thrilled to welcome three new pieces from her.
Specialising in abstract landscapes, her work explores the vast beauty of the outback through rich earthy tones and dynamic brushwork. Emma is self-taught, with a background in Visual Communication and Design, which influences her approach to composition, texture and colour.
The three works - Boundless, Above the Red, and A Dance at Dawn are available now.
Emma will also be one of the artists taking part in our Lazy Person’s Arts Trail at the gallery from 12-15 December. Pop along to meet her in person and see these beautiful paintings.
Ahead of showing the works in the gallery, Emma told us about how she creates movement in her work, telling a story of the land's elemental energy, and how she hopes people feel when they see her beautiful work.
How would you describe your work?
"As a contemporary abstract landscape artist, my work is defined by a unique colour palette, featuring rich earthy tones, burnt oranges, ochres, deep reds, and rust. The consistency of these tones has become a signature element in her work."
How do you create your work?
"I begin with intuitive gestures and free-flowing brushstrokes, allowing the landscape to reveal itself through the process of layering. Using various brush techniques to create depth and transparency, movement is created, adding life to my pieces."
What's the story of your work at Tyger?
"My body of work for Tyger is a tribute to the rich, untamed beauty of the Australian landscape, told through 3 unique pieces that explore different perspectives of nature's story. Each work used my signature earthy tones-deep reds, ochres, and burn oranges to capture the land's essence of warmth, resilience and timeless allure."
"The varying sizes of each piece represent the diverse scales of our vast terrain, while their distinct compositions highlight the interplay of movement, light and texture. Together they form a narrative of the land's elemental energy and its capacity to inspire and connect us all."
What inspires you?
"The colours speak to me as if they are a vision—intuitive and ever-evolving rather than representing a fixed place. Through time, inspiration has come from connection, feeling and family. It's the stories of their travels, photos of moments frozen in time and almost like an ode of reverence to my past and current relatives."
What do you hope people feel when they see your work?
"Much like life itself, I invite people to experience my landscapes - not as a fixed place, but something alive, breathing, ever-changing and full of stories. I hope that the warmth of the colour palette, evokes a deep appreciation for our natural environment, grounding the viewer and allowing them to take a breath, pause and reflect."
