Vanessa is a Geelong-based artist working with a focus on hand-cut collage. In her clever, witty and engaging collages she places familiar objects into unfamiliar situations, settings and combinations. She uses vintage magazines, second-hand books, old postcards and other found materials, with 1950s and 1960s advertising, word play, bright colours and the natural world frequent themes in her work.

We absolutely LOVE Vanessa's superb work, so we're delighted to welcome her back for Life in Colour.

Ahead of the show opening, Vanessa told us about the search for right images to use in her work, collages with a story to tell, and how she hopes people feel when they see her work.

Where do you create your work?

"At my studio table, with my favourite pair of scissors and surrounded by piles of second-hand books and vintage magazines."

How do you create your work?

"I love the creative editing process that goes into making a collage – sourcing, selecting, and combining different images and materials to create something new. I often spend hours looking through my collection of old books and magazines searching for just the right image to use."

What inspires your collages?

"I find inspiration for my collages in different places. Sometimes I have a story to tell, but often I simply like how a group of images look together."

What do you hope people feel when they see your work?

"I hope people find small, unexpected details in my collages that make them smile."

Register for the opening celebration of Life in Colour on Saturday 16 November here.
