Cassandra is a Canberra artist who makes vibrant expressive abstract paintings, often inspired by the landscape and travel experiences. Her gorgeous work is characterized by layers of rich colours, textures, and gestural brushstrokes. She has been a Finalist in the Waterbrook Landscape Prize and a finalist in the ACT Historic Places Art Prize.
Her work in Life in Colour is Kaleidoscope Land - a 42x42cm oil on canvas beauty.
Ahead of the show opening, Cassandra told us about creating while the kids are at school, recreating the emotions felt in a landscape, and what she hopes people feel when they see her work.
Where do you create your work?
"I am incredibly grateful to work from a studio within an arts centre in Canberra, so I’m surrounded by other creatives. I’m at the studio 4-5 days a week for six hours at a time whilst the kiddos are at school."
How do you create your work?
"Some paintings are a direct response to the visual elements of the landscape. To create these paintings, I will bring plein-air paintings, photographs, and memories of family hikes into the studio."
"Often, I will compete a series of paintings on paper that may move from figurative to abstract representations. Sometimes I will keep these in view as I work on paintings and other times, I will put them away and work solely from my memory and feeling of a place."
What inspires you?
"I love to create work based on my personal experience within an environment. I enjoy the challenge of recreating a sense of the emotions I felt whilst interacting within a place. I am especially inspired by the natural landscape and traveling to new places. The act of creating something from nothing and experimenting with paint in it's self is incredibly exciting and inspiring."
What do you hope people feel when they see your work?
“I hope that people feel drawn to a particular painting simply because ‘they just love it’. Especially regarding abstract works, I don’t believe you need to understand a painting to know that you like it.”
“People are often drawn to one of my paintings because they feel a connection to the place that inspired a painting, or the colours and textures excite them”.
