Kate Stehr

Kate is a sculptor based in the Illawarra who has a keen interest in working with timber. Her works are often influenced by a desire to celebrate the history and memory found in objects that would otherwise be discarded or become trash. She sees her works as linked by their materiality and often by the way they thwart their intended use or purpose.

Kate completed an Advanced Diploma of Fine Arts at TAFE in 2004, a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with Honours, majoring in Sculpture, in 2007, and a Diploma of Education in 2008. She later completed a Masters of Philosophy in Creative Art Research in 2018, with her research project exploring the need for the translation of traditional narratives into contemporary sculptural forms.

Kate's works have been exhibited nationally and internationally and she has been the recipient of a number of sculpture awards including the Clitheroe Emerging Sculptor Prize. Her works are also a part of the Wollongong Art Gallery’s permanent collection and have been featured in a number of publications.
