  • Jade Whelan is an emerging artist based in Canberra/Ngunnawal Country, Australia.

Jade primarily produces paintings but works in other media, including print and sculpture.

Jade is heavily influenced by abstract expressionism. Her practice is defined by the language of colour and how it interplays with her emotions. She places her inner impulses directly onto the surface.

Little preparation goes into her work. Often, colours or shapes appear to her erratically. She uses these as a base for her paintings, relying on instinct for gestural mark-making, and her personal view of balance.

Her approach is spontaneous and unplanned. Usually made in one sitting, her art results from inner feelings from a moment.

Jade is currently represented by the Toowoomba Gallery.

She has been a finalist in multiple art prizes, including the Blacktown City Art Prize (2024), Fisher's Ghost Art Award (2023) and Toowoomba Gallery's Next Big Thing (2024).

  • "This piece is inspired by glass vases, knick-knacks, golden sunlight and forgotten things. A thick yellow line began this painting."

    Jade Whelan, 2024.
