Nigel Killalea is one of those rare landscape painters whose facility with paint and intuitive eye always brings something startlingly fresh to the environments that he paints.
Nigel grew up on the land, in rural Burrandana located in the south-eastern Riverina. In 1990 he completed postgraduate studies in Fine Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts.
Since completing his studies Nigel has lived and worked in regional New South Wales painting the landscape of places such as Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Tamworth and Hill End.
Through his painting, Nigel tells a story about the Australian landscape that is infused with his own personal mythology. Nigel uses the landscape as a vehicle for narratives drawing out the histories and hidden ghosts of places.
Nigel is particularly drawn to places in the Australian landscape that were once inhabited and then deserted. As a reflection of this, Nigel’s landscapes are always un-peopled yet a human presence remains eerily embedded in the remanent traces left in the landscape. In this way, the images exude a spiritual force and a sense of awe and wonderment in nature’s vistas.
Nigel is a distinguished regional artist who has been awarded the Bellingen Art Prize and the Tamara Acquisitive Prize by the Tamworth Regional Art Gallery and has exhibited widely.
