Kay's work dances around a spontaneous and instinctive expression where paintings, clay and other relief type works combine (and recombine) the various formal elements of her practice. An attitude of playfulness is valued as the way to keep the creative door always open. Surfaces can vary from roughly hewn and densely coated to a thinner and more delicate use of paint, texture and materials.
Mostly abstract to look at, Kay's work can also allude to, or involve, a figurative expression, emanating from her interest in fractal geometry and the infinite unseen intricacies of the universe. Fragments are an important element in her work, not being subsumed to the whole but asserting their presence within work without necessarily making any sense.

“In my practice I don’t always make work that specifically references landscape; however all my work is about myself and my relationship to the phenomenal world. As said by another, ‘our bodies and senses are in constant interaction with our surroundings that, in turn, give our consciousness its concrete contents’ (Gadamer).”
“And what is foundational to how I see myself in the world are my childhood experiences on a farm in the Great Southern of Western Australia. The way the land was organised into varying rectangles and squares, punctuated with round water sources, and sat, always, looking up at the diversity of a huge Karri forest that ran the entire length of our eastern boundary – this specific environment contained the shapes and colours that have stayed in my psyche and emerge on a daily basis in my work.”
“As a child these encounters with the landscape were steeped in wonder, freedom, autonomy and self-determination. Abstraction is said to be our first language – the one where we see and understand a tree without even having to know its name and memory is said to operate poetically and in an abstract way when it draws on seminal experiences of the past in the present day.”
