Sophie Ryan is an artist from Bathurst, New South Wales living in Canberra. Sophie is driven by a deep connection to her surroundings and a desire to convey a sense of vitality and movement in the world around her.

Sophie moved to Canberra in 2018, undertaking study at The School of Art and Design at The Australian National University, where she graduated in 2022.

Working primarily in painting, Sophie paints a variety of subjects explored through energy in gestural brushstrokes, and a vivid colour palette to create a sense of connection to place and emotion.

Sophie is currently looking into different ways of representing landscapes through gesture, embodiment, emotion and memory while combining elements of drawing and painting.

After the rain, the small creek that runs through the property becomes rushing and bustling with life. The sound of the movement of water along stones, wind through the trees, and birds in the distance is all encompassing. The artist creates a sense of movement and vitality through the use of colour, layering, and gestural brush strokes.
