  • Martine is an emerging artist with a love of antique and vintage printed paper in all forms. And a passion for showcasing its inherent and often forgotten beauty, and using the medium of collage to create artworks of layered complexity.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Graphic Communication from the Queensland College of Art in the 1980s, where her love of the printing process and the tactile qualities of paper and ink began. She worked as a Graphic Designer in Queensland for many years.

Rescued old books and found ephemera directly influence her work, and most collages are created in a series, each unique yet aesthetically related. The patina and texture of these materials, dating from 1870s to the 1960s, is exquisite.

The collage process is slow and deliberate: finding old books, curating papers and ephemera, assembling elements, and finally composing. Most of the materials have been collected over the past 12 years.

Her work has a focus on colour, and a restraint of composition. The colour palette, style and composition of my work has a graphic quality and often shows Japanese influence.

  • "The work is a collage of a coastal landscape, based on the ancient coastline where I lived for just over a decade, at the bottom on Australia in Inverloch, Victoria. The sand, the sea, the rockpools, the sky - they all became imprinted on/in my soul as I walked this landscape almost daily, noticing the changes each tide, each day, each week, each month and each year would bring. The landscape changed and so did I. In a way, this collage is my attempt to capture the spirit and calm and beauty and energy of this landscape where I walk.”
