Chantal is a Gippsland-based artist whose stunning softly abstracted landscapes are often created with natural ochres and pigments that are native to the places that hold deep meaning for her. Her deeply evocative works are a huge favourite of Tyger Gallery visitors.
We're thrilled to show her beautiful paintings in Life in Colour.
Ahead of the show opening, Chantal told us about creating with freedom and play, painting what she feels rather than what she sees, and how she hopes people feel when they see her work.
Where do you create your work?
"I work in a beautiful old Grainstore attached to the back of my home which used to be an Old General Store in our local area. It's solid timber beams and expansive space provide me with a sense of freedom to create. I look from here across the beautiful rolling hills of the Baw Baw ranges."
How do you create your works?
"I like create works with a sense of freedom and play - allowing myself to let go of overthinking and working with expressive responses to feeling and emotion."
"I like to portray the importance of landscape in our physical and inner lives. Rather than reproducing specific scenes, I like to convey the sense of being in the landscape, engaging memory and imagination. Its not about painting what I see, but how I feel. I try to capture the energy I feel when I am in a landscape and paint that."
What do you hope people feel when they see your work?
"I hope that when people look at my work they are able to reflect on how beautiful the earth that we call home really is and that they can take the time to slow down and allow the joy of the art to speak to them."
"I hope that through my work they can find a way to connect themselves back to the earth too."
"By using loose gestural marks I hope to convey this sense of letting go of control and allowing ourselves to be within the cycles and systems of nature. I hope my audience can find that sense of connection to nature that I feel is necessary to us living our best lives."
