Georgina is a Collingwood-based collage artist who draws her inspiration from music, creating beautiful works of bright colour and simple shapes. We absolutely love her work, and are so thrilled to welcome her back to Tyger.
Her work in Life in Colour is Bird Song in Blue (Melody Moving Through Rhythm). It's a stunner.
Ahead of the show opening, Georgina told us about her collage process, the components of birdsong, and how music can influence human emotion.
How do you create your work?
"My process begins with a shape. I have paper surrounding me on the desk and I confess the floor."
"I’ll find a shape that intrigues me and start to play, moving it around. One shape leads to another. My collages will usually contain pieces that are already cut from the pile and shapes I deliberately cut to respond."
"When the collage emerges and an idea breaks through, I may make many in a similar style but I rarely approach the blank canvas with a preconceived idea."
What's the story of your work in Life in Colour?
"As a young student I had an inspirational composition teacher. I remember her clearly beginning a lesson by telling me she had heard a bird song during the week. She then played it to me on the piano. We then discussed its components. It was such a whimsical moment and I recall it vividly even though it was 30 years ago. Music, nature and life mixed together."
What inspires you?
"Music. The intricacies of counterpoint, harmony and form and how knowledge of them can influence human emotion."
What do you hope people feel when they see the work?
"Joy. Music is colour."
