With a lifelong passion for art, Lucy studied visual arts and photography throughout high school. Her art process has since been developed through self-directed experimentation as well as drawing classes and workshops.
Her work in the show - Weekends at Home - is mixed media, and absolutely beautiful.
Ahead of the show opening, Lucy told us about pondering unanswerable questions, the creative energy of music, and being inspired by nature.
Where do you create your work?
"Surrounded by beaches and farmland, Port Macquarie functions through cycles of busy holiday seasons and quiet lulls."
"I create art throughout my home in the small town of Port Macquarie including in my home studio. Occasionally a work demands to be created outside, and I have also performed live painting in a public setting."
How do you create your work?
"I create my work intuitively. I prefer not to overthink art, and I enjoy the physical sensations of painting and drawing."
"Art is therapeutic for me and functions as a way to express my emotions, capture moments, connect and communicate with others. Each artwork ponders an unanswerable question."
What's the story behind Weekends at Home?
"It was painted over several weekends in July 2024. The succulent was the conceptual starting point and the last detail to be painted. The black oil pastel scribble was added upon hearing the footage of the first assassination attempt on Donald Trump. The book clippings are from a loose page I found outside of my house. The rest of the painting is jovial and relaxed, depicting the general feel of a weekend spent recharging in a home shared with a loved one."
What inspires you?
"I am inspired by regular trips to galleries locally, as well as visits around Australia and the world. The local creative scene in Port Macquarie forms a supportive and talented community to boost each individual's endeavours. Music provides me with lots of creative energy which I also channel through playing the piano."
"Most of all I am inspired by nature's muddled, spiralling beauty and the occasional synchronicity."
What do you hope people feel when they see your work?
"I hope that my work can imbue a sense of curiosity and wonder in viewers."
